Lip Bumper

The Lip Bumper

The lip bumper is a simple appliance that goes on the lower teeth. There is a band around the first molar on each side that the lp bumper bar slides into. The lip bumper wire rests just in front of the lower teeth and holds the lip out. By letting the tongue rest in its normal position in the mouth a slow and stable expansion occurs. The lip bumper is a simple device, but it does take some time to get used to it. It is going to save space and help to hold room for the permanent teeth in hopes that none of them will need to be extracted.

You will find that the lip bumper bar is not cemented or tied into the back bands and that it can be taken out. However, Dr. Way wants you to leave it in! If it is not in the mouth all the time then it is not working. You can brush your teeth with it in, eat, play sports, and even play musical instruments. There is no need to take it out. You will need to be careful to avoid sticky and chewy foods so that you do not pull the bands in the back loose.

The lip bumper can be in for 1-2 years. Dr. Way will continue to check it and adjust the bar if necessary at regular appointments. We are sure that you will adjust to the lip bumper quickly and we are always here if you have questions or concerns.
