The Lingual Arch
The lingual arch is placed on the inside of either the upper or lower teeth. There
is a band around the first molar that the lingual arch bar is welded to. The bar
is thin and smooth and just rests on the inside of the teeth.
The lingual arch is a simple device, but it does take some time to get used to.
The second baby molars are larger than the permanent teeth that will take their
place. The llingual arch will hold the permanent first molars back so that they
do not move forward into the extra space that Dr. Way will use to alleviate crowding
of the teeth.
How long the lingual arch stays in place will vary from patient to patient. Dr.
Way will continue to check it an adjust it if necessary at regular appointments.
It will be important to avoid sticky and chewy foods so that you do not pull the
bands in the back loose. We are sure that you will adjust to the lingual arch quickly
and we are always here if you have questions or concerns.
