The RPE

The RPE : (Rapid Palate! Expander) With Mini-Super Screw

  • At this appointment your child has received a rapid palatal expander. The expander has a "mini-super screw" that will enable your child to turn the expander by him or herself. Your child will be using the "wrench" given to you to turn the expander 2 times In the morning and 2 times at night Encourage your child to turn at a pace that 1 comfortable for him or her. Sometimes turning at a slower pace will decrease any pressure the patient might feel.
  • If your child forgets to do the turns in the morning, do not make up the turns at night, always do just 2 turns. Your child may feel some pressure during the turn or after for 1-2 minutes. This is normal. In some cases the child may feel pressure in the bridge of his or her nose, this is also normal.
  • Try to turn the expander at the same time everyday. This will help your family make the turns a part of your schedule.
  • Once you have started turning, a space will form between the two front teeth. This space can get quite large. Your child may tell you that he or she feels that his or her two front teeth are loose or sore, this is normal! Four to six weeks AFTER you stop turning this space will start to close by itself. The RPE is still holding the skeletal width that was gained, only the teeth are drifting back toward the mid-line. Dr. Way will close this space completely with brackets or "braces" on the upper front teeth.
  • The RPE will make swallowing, talking and eating a little strange for a few days. We recommend that your child start with softer foods and take smaller bites at first He or she will know when they are ready to try different foods. Reading a book out loud and talking to friends or pets is a good way to practice speaking with the RPE.
  • Your child will adjust to the RPE quickly, and we are always available for any questions you or your child may have.
